Roofing Door Hangers: Examples and the Wording That Gets a Call

By Aaryan Gupta October 4, 2026

A roofing door hanger that gets a call has a bold headline, contrasting colors, one clear line telling the homeowner what to do, and a drop on streets picked for a reason. One sales rep on r/RoofingSales, counting only hangers left without a conversation, saw response run from 2 per 10,000 on his worst design to about 1.3% on his best, and he credited those things for the gap.

Check the wording as closely as the layout. “We pay your deductible” is a crime in Texas, and a Florida hanger that encourages a roof claim needs three legal notices. To weigh hangers against yard signs and postcards, see Yard Signs, Door Hangers and Postcards: What Offline Roofing Marketing Still Works.

Cut a first hanger down to one headline and one number

A 21-year-old helping a small roofing company posted his first hanger on Reddit: the logo, a photo of the crew on a job, the phone number and $750 off a roof replacement.

Four things compete for the eye on that hanger, and the offer is the only one that gives a homeowner a reason to call. Put the offer in the biggest type and the phone number second, and shrink the logo to a line at the bottom. On Vistaprint’s smaller size, 3.5 by 8.5 inches, a photo on the front leaves little room for anything else, so move the crew photo to the back. (In Florida, keep a discount like that off any hanger tied to an inspection or an insurance claim, as explained below.)

Copy these four hangers, one for each reason you are on that street

Swap the brackets for your own details. Print your license number on every one: Florida requires the registration or certification number on every advertisement, and California requires the license number in all forms of advertising.

1. The neighbor job. Hang it on the houses around a roof you are replacing.

We’re putting a new roof on a home on [Street Name] this week. While our crew is on your street, we can look at your roof too. Call or text [Your Name] at [phone]. [Company] · [City] · License #[number]

One owner on r/Roofing stopped putting out yard signs until install day because competitors were knocking those doors and badmouthing his company. If that happens in your market, hang these on install day.

2. Sorry we missed you. Leave it after a knock where nobody answered.

We stopped by today about your roof and missed you. [Rep Name] from [Company] is working in [Neighborhood] this week. Call or text [Rep Name] directly at [cell]. License #[number]

3. After a storm. Hang it once you know which streets the storm crossed.

Hail came through [Neighborhood] on [date]. If you’d like your roof checked, call or text [phone] and we’ll set a time. [Company] · License #[number]

Leave deductibles, claims and adjusters off this one. The Texas and Florida section below explains why.

4. The finished job. Leave it on your customer’s door after the final cleanup.

Your new roof is done. Thank you, [Customer Name]. If we did right by you, a Google review helps your neighbors find us. Scan the code to leave one. [Review QR code] Questions about the work: [phone]

Google Business Profile makes the review code under Read Reviews, then Get more reviews, and only from a computer browser. Offer nothing for the review, because Google treats a discount or free service in exchange for a review as fake engagement and prohibits it.

A hanger can go on just the houses around one job, which route mail cannot

A New York roofing contractor went looking for a company to mail postcards to 25 to 500 neighbors before, during or right after a job. Every Door Direct Mail covers whole carrier routes, so it can’t reach a group that small. A hanger goes on exactly the houses you pick.

In October 2026, Vistaprint’s door hanger page read “Starting at $0.07/2000.” That price leaves out design and the time to walk the street.

Every Door Direct Mail retail postage is $0.260 a piece for flats, and a single First-Class postcard costs $0.65 in postage alone, both at USPS rates effective July 2026. Price a hanger drop by the hours it takes as well as the print order.

After a storm, your hanger lands on a door that already has a stack

A rep on r/RoofingSales working a saturated hail market wrote, “Every house that I go to knock already has magazines, door hangers.” An Illinois rep in the same thread added that one homeowner told him he was the 25th person in two weeks.

Competitors pull hangers off doors, too. A newer rep on r/RoofingSales asked whether he should collect other companies’ cards and hangers after a storm, since he had a nice collection after one day.

In a storm week, put the street, the storm date and the name of the rep who knocked on the hanger. Then plan to come back and knock.

”We pay your deductible” is a crime in Texas and barred in Florida

After a Virginia hailstorm, a sales rep on r/RoofingSales found competitor hangers reading “we pay your deductible!” In Texas, advertising or promising to pay, waive, absorb or rebate a homeowner’s insurance deductible without the insurer’s consent is a Class B misdemeanor under Business and Commerce Code 27.02.

Texas Insurance Code 4102.163 also bars a contractor from acting as a public adjuster or advertising to adjust claims on any property it is or may be working on. Leave off lines like “we handle your claim” or “we negotiate with your adjuster.”

Florida Statute 489.147 names door hangers among the ads it covers: any written piece from a contractor that encourages a homeowner to contact a contractor or public adjuster to make an insurance claim for roof damage. That hanger is lawful only if it carries notices that the homeowner pays any deductible, that waiving a deductible is felony insurance fraud, and that filing a false claim is felony insurance fraud. The notices must be in at least 12-point type and at least half the size of the largest font on the hanger. Copy their wording from the statute itself.

The same law bars a Florida contractor from offering a rebate, gift, gift card, cash, coupon, deductible waiver or anything else of value in exchange for allowing a roof inspection or making a claim. A licensed contractor can be fined up to $10,000 per violation. Keep coupons off any Florida hanger tied to an inspection or a claim, and read every storm hanger against your own state’s law first.

Hang it on the doorknob, and check your city’s handbill rules first

Federal law, 18 U.S.C. 1725, makes it an offense to put unstamped material like a circular in a mailbox to avoid postage. Tell whoever walks the street to hang every one on the doorknob and keep them out of the mailbox.

Cities can also set rules for commercial handbills. In Watchtower Bible & Tract Society v. Village of Stratton (2002), the Supreme Court struck down a village permit rule for door-to-door canvassing, and its syllabus notes the rule might have survived had it applied only to commercial activity and fundraising. A roofer’s hanger is commercial, so read your city’s code on handbills before a crew walks a neighborhood. Do Roofers Need a Solicitor Permit to Door Knock? covers the permit side.

Give each drop its own number or scan code so you can count jobs

A hanger with your main office number gets mixed into every other call. Put a call-tracking number on each batch, so the calls from the neighbor-job hangers and the storm hangers land in separate counts.

If the hanger carries a QR code to a page on your website, tag that link. Google Analytics says to use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign together, for example source “door-hanger”, medium “print” and campaign “[street]-[month]”. The tag counts scans and the number counts calls, but neither tells you which hangers signed a job. Mark each inspection with the hanger that brought it in and check the list after a month. How to Track Which Marketing Brings In Your Roofing Jobs sets that up.

Check these before the print order goes in

  • One headline in the biggest type over one phone number, in contrasting colors.
  • License number printed on every hanger.
  • No deductible promises and no “we handle your claim.”
  • In Florida, the three notices in the required type size on any hanger that encourages a roof claim, and no coupon tied to an inspection or a claim.
  • Nothing offered for a Google review on the finished-job hanger.
  • A tracking number or tagged QR code for each batch.
  • Hung on the door, never in the mailbox, after you’ve read your city’s handbill rules.

A homeowner holding your hanger may still look you up on Google before calling, and a free Google Maps heatmap shows what they find: pick your Google profile and a search, and in a few minutes you’ll see your rank at 49 points around your office.
